Vineyard Plantings

Kluge Estate sits in the Monticello appellation, chosen by Thomas Jefferson as the US winemaking’s introductory spot, and builds upon the history of Virginia wine.

When establishing a vineyard, the site itself is a crucial factor. When choosing an area for growing, considerations include: elevation and slope; good soil; frost; and
pest management. Kluge Estate’s vineyard boasts high elevation
(800 – 1,100 feet) and excellent
air drainage (slopes), which reduces chances of an early spring frost.

Also the rootstocks chosen by Kluge Estate, which have proven well in Virginia, play an equally important role in setting the wine apart. The winery has selected clones based specifically on the needs and demands of the site and the style of wine to be produced.

The majority of Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard is planted for the New World Reds and includes the five main Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The varietal used for the sparkling wines and aperitif is Chardonnay. Kluge Estate is already implementing expansion plans ensuring more acres and increased production.

Another important factor at Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard is the dedicated staff. Everyone is like a family and one of the contributions the team gives is their love of wine and pride in the product.
